Biography
Frederic Alonzo Carrington has often been called "The Father of New Plymouth". He selected the site of the settlement, was in charge of surveying the area and laid out a plan for the town. Carrington arrived in Taranaki on the Brougham-one of the earliest ships to come to New Plymouth- and was employed by the Plymouth Company as a surveyor. His brothers, Octavius and Wellington, who arrived a little later, were also surveyors. In 1869, Carrington was elected Provincial Superintendent and later the Member of Parliament for New Plymouth
