Biography
Born at Opunake in August 1882, Robert Reid was a son of Alexander Walker Reid. Robert left home at a young age and worked as a shearer and general farm hand for Thomas Wright of Okoki.
He joined the 11th Taranaki Company of the Wellington Infantry Battalion (Colonel Malone was the commanding officer). In 1915 the company was sent to Gallipoli where Reid was wounded a day after the landing. He was repatriated to New Zealand. He returned to active duty in 1916, returning to France and served through to the battle for Flanders.
Returning to New Zealand Reid took up an 80 acre soldier settler farm at Wharehuia on the Croydon Road (now Barleyman Rd.) he farmed here until his death 31 December 1949 and is buried in the soldier cemetery at Kopouatama, Stratford.
