Biography
Sited on Devon Street East New Plymouth, La Scala, the city's oldest licensed restaurant (obtaining a liquor license in 1966) was established in the 1965 by Frank Gibbons. With its distinctive décor and entrance bridge, it was one of the “places to be seen” in town.
In 1978 Fred and Ria Harmsen purchased La Scala, refurbished the premises and called the restaurant City Gate.
Renamed the Peacock Restaurant in 1984, the restaurant served Chinese food. The restaurant has had three further names changes - Hong Kong in 1989, Ning Bo in 1993 and is currently (2008) operating as the Sun World Restaurant.
