Biography
Smith, horticulturist and amateur naturalist, was born in Scotland in 1852 and came to New Zealand in the 1880s. He was a gardener at Mount Peel, Canterbury, for five years and subsequently at Ashburton Domain, Palmerston North, and Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, 1906-1918. He married Mary Foreman in 1880 and had at least seven children, three of whom died in childhood.
Smith was a member of the Scenery Preservation Department and served as secretary to the Polynesian Society from 1911 to 1922. He was made a life member of the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society in 1931.
He died at New Plymouth in 1942.
