Biography
Paraharaha was born in Whakatane and was a member of the Ngatiawa iwi.A priest of the Hauhau religion, Paraharaha was involved with the massacre of Mr. James Fulloon and the crew of the 'Kate' at Whakatane. He was oringally sentenced to death but this was changed to life in prison when the inquiry into the massacre announced that Paraharaha was attempting to save members of the Arawas iwi and fired his weapon into the sea. He was sent to Mount Eden Stockade to carry out his sentence and served just under a year of it before dying of scrofulous abcesses in the neck.
