"Paraharaha"
Production date
Circa 1900
Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Rawiri Paraharaha, Pai Mārire priest of Ngāti Awa. He appears seated, from the knee up and facing forward, holding a taiaha across his torso in each hand, looking slightly to his right. He is dressed in a light-toned shirt with a chequered chest panel, light-toned trousers, piupiu, a brimmed hat and an ascot cravat. In his left hand he also holds a light-toned cloth. Paraharaha sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre, which has a hole in the upper right corner, and appears to be part of a structure judging by the obscured part of the image on the lower-left side. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
