Description
Born in Ireland, John Coleman Moore, a bachelor, farmed on Kohuratahi Road near Stratford. A soldier settler from the First World War, (1st NZEF, Trooper, Wellington Mounted Rifles) Moore walked off the land around 1955 and it is assumed he went to live in New Plymouth. He left everything behind, including a collection of letters written mostly to Marjorie Whitehorn of George Street, Hawera, daughter of Francis and Sophie Moore by her brother and artist John Lysaght Moore, serving as a stretcher bearer in France 1917 - 1919 and correspondence between Frances Edward Moore of South Taranaki and his daughters Marjorie and Evelyn, 1900 - 1907.
The Kohuratahi farmhouse became derelict; neighbours salvaged the letters before the house burnt down sometime in the 1980's -1990's.
John Coleman Moore died 16 October 1961 at Onerahi Private Hospital, Whangarei aged 93 years. He is buried in the Te Henui Soldiers Cemetery, New Plymouth.
