Description
Stapp arrived in New Zealand with the 58th Regiment in 1845 as an NCO. He served in the war against Hone Heke, then returned to England as a commissioned officer.
He served in the Crimean War, then he returned to New Plymouth, resigned from the British Army and offered his services to the Colonial Government and was appointed Lieutenant and Adjutant of the New Plymouth Militia and Volunteers in 1859. In 1865 he became second-in-command of the East Coast Expeditionary Force and later succeeded to the Command.
After hostilities ceased Stapp returned to Taranaki and commanded the Taranaki Volunteers. In 1881 he became the commander of the Western Military District, was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1886 and retired in 1890.He died in August 1900.
The letters are to his wife from Wanganui, Wellington and Opotiki. The latter (September to November) describe the campaign against the Hau Hau and the capture of the pa at Te Tarata and Te Puia.
