Description
Photograph of memorial hatchment for the the 58th Regiment. The hatchment is part of a series painted by Reverend Philip Walsh in 1899, displayed in the Taranaki Cathedral Church of St. Mary. It features The British Crown, underneath which appears the number '58'. Two flags cross in the middle of the painting, the Union Jack on the left and the 58th regimental flag on the right. Between the flags is a painted medallion depicting the regiment's insignia. A ribbon features across and wrapped around the flagpoles, reading "RUTLANDSHIRE REGT." Directly below, at the bottom of the hatchment is an image of a sphinx, in profile facing left. The painting is square shaped, rotated 45 degrees and appears mounted on a light surface, in a dark-toned frame. The photograph is included on page 43 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
