Ward is standing with his right hand in his pocket and his 12th Regiment cap in his left hand. A painted studio background with an arched window is visible behind them on the left and there is a geometric patterned rug on the floor. Both men are in military uniform. The photograph is included on page 42 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
