Description
A Military General Service Medal. The silver medal features a young head profile of Queen Victoria on the obverse. " VICTORIA REGINA 1848 " is embossed around the profile. The reverse features the standing figure of the Queen bestowing victor's laurels on a kneeling Duke of Wellington. " TO THE BRITISH ARMYY 1793-1814 " is embossed on the reverse. " JOSHUA SPENCER 14th FOOT " is marked on the edge. The medal is attached to a crimson ribbon edged with dark blue via a straight bar. A " CORUNNA " clasp is attached to the ribbon. The ribbon is mounted on cardboard.

This medal was awarded to Joshua Spencer of the 14th Regiment. Military General Service Medals were issued to members of British Army that served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars from 1793-1814. They were issued to surviving claimants in 1848. The clasp on this medal indicates it was issued for the Battle of Corunna in 1809. It was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of the collection of prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
