Biography
John Houston was a prominent lawyer in Hāwera who collected Māori material and medals and had a significant library. When he died his taonga Māori collection and medals came to the Taranaki Museum and his books went to the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington.He was also the author of numerous newspaper articles on Māori topics and local history in the Hawera Star during the 1930s and produced a couple of booklets (one on Turi and another on Turuturu mōkai). His book Maori life on old Taranaki was published after his death. He served in the Medical Corps during World War I and as part of the New Zealand Temporary Service in World War II.
