Description
A French silver Mexico Medal (Médaille de Mexique). The obverse features a left facing profile of Emperor Napoleon III wreathed and surrounded by a bound wreath. " NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR " is marked around it. " EARRE" is marked in very small letters under the profile. The reverse features the same bound wreath surrounding a central inscription " CUMBRES / CERRO BORREGO / SAN LORENZO / PUERLA / MEXICO ". "EXPEDITION DU MEXIQUE 1862-1865 " is marked around it. The medal is attached to a ribbon which features a black eagle wrestling a green snake with a red and green cross behind them.

This medal was issued by Emperor Napoleon III for service during the French campaign in Mexico during the 1860s. See the Fitzwilliam Museum http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/explorer/index.php?qu=Mexico  OR Aztec&oid=141552. This medal was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of the large collection of medals belonging to prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
