Biography
Born in England in 1840, Stephenson Percy Smith came to New Zealand in 1850, settling in New Plymouth where he later trained as a surveyor. He worked in a number of places throughout New Zealand and developed a keen interest in botany and geology. He was also a founder member of the Polynesian Society and played an active role in community affairs
