Biography
In 1987 Brian Wafer established the Ima Hitt Record label in New Plymouth. Wafer had opened a shop in the city in 1980 specialising in second-hand records. He was a pioneer in the production of limited–run cassettes of local performers in the mid-1980s and his support and organisation of the local music scene in the 1980s and 90s saw Taranaki established as New Zealand’s centre of punk rock. The Ima Hitt Records label used a well-known photograph of the New Plymouth Post Office clocktower being demolished in 1967. His first record What is This Place? was a compilation of 12 local bands including Loving Homes for Rotting Gnomes, Belsen Waifs, Dioxin O.D., Bananamen and Sticky Filth.Over the next decade Wafer produced 20 or more records of local bands, including several singles and EPs of the classic punk/hardcore group, Sticky Filth. Ima Hitt Records produced mostly vinyl records but also a few cassettes in the mid-1980s and it continues to release local artists.
