Biography
John Veale was born in Clawton, near Holesworthy in North Devon, England in 1814. He was the son of John Veale (1786-1851) and Hannah Veale (nee Furze) (1788-1858). He married Agnes Cole while living in England. The couple had six children - Thomas, Elisha [male], John, Jane, Elizabeth and Sophia. The family arrived in New Plymouth aboard the "Hamilla Mitchell" in February 1854 via Auckland. In New Plymouth Veale worked as a carpenter and builder. He was also a member of the New Plymouth Town Board and was a founding member of the Taranaki Land, Building and Investment Society. He was a member of the Wesleyan diocese. He died in May 1907, 29 years after his wife Agnes.
