Biography
Born 1847 in Auckland, Hughes came to New Plymouth as a young man and was articled as a solicitor's clerk to William Halse.
Admitted to the Bar in 1870, he set himself up in his own practice in New Plymouth.
Active in local and provincial affairs as a member of the Provincial Council, the Taranaki Rifles, and founder of the New Plymouth Beautifying Society, involved in the development of Pukekura Park.
He was an avid reader, especially of poetry, and keenly interested in Taranaki Maori history, lore, sites and language.
He died in 1935.
