Biography
William Andrews Collis was born in Fiji in 1853 of Wesleyan missionary parents. In 1869, at 16 years of age, Collis began his training with Hartley Webster, the New Plymouth photographer.
Collis worked as a professional photographer, covering child studies, weddings and family groups, but he had a special talent for scenic photography and his collection provides a record of the growth of New Plymouth, Taranaki and its scenery.
