Biography
Charles Stapp joined the 58th Regiment at Dublin in 1842 and served in New Zealand in 1845. He returned to England and voluntarily served in the Crimean War. He retired in 1858 and returned to New Plymouth, New Zealand where he was appointed Lieutenant and Adjutant of the New Plymouth Militia and Taranaki Rifle Volunteers 1858 - 1859. He was involved in action at the Battle of Waireka, at Huirangi, Kaihihi and Kaitake. He was promoted to a higher ranking position following these battles as the second-in-command at Opotiki 1865. He remained involved with the military settlers and organised the recovery of bodies from the massacre at the whitecliffs in 1869. He retired as a Colonel in 1891 and died on the 6th of August 1900.
