Born in London, Jane Maria Richmond came to New Zealand in 1853 on board the ship Sir Edward Paget, settling in New Plymouth. In 1854 she married Arthur Samuel Atkinson. Jane Maria Atkinson was the first European woman to reach the summit of Mt Taranaki.
