Vivian Thorby

Biography
Vivian Thorby was born in Waverly in 1932. She moved to Inglewood when she was six and then later married and moved to Tikorangi in the 1960s. She was a farmer’s wife and had two girls and two boys.

Thorby was a very domestic-minded rural woman with a strong no waste policy. She had a massive garden, did a lot of preserving, reclycled and upcycled and bought very little brand new. She used flour bags to make the bodices of her girls’ tartan skirts. Her boys wore shorts lined with flour bags and made from material cut down from Thorby’s father’s suits.
