Biography
Henry William Young was born in India around 1836 and was the first son of the Government of Bombay Chief Secretary (1848-1850), Henry Young. Young attended Brighton College, and from 1854-1856 received his education at the East India Company’s Addiscombe Military Seminary. After his officer cadet training, Young was appointed second Lieutenant of the 4th Bombay Rifles on October 29th 1856. Almost three years later on August 23rd 1859, Henry William Young was commissioned as a cornet in the 17th Lancers, likely due to his service in the Indian uprising of 1857. In 1861 he was promoted to Lieutenant and then again to Captain in 1866. He transferred to the 18th (Royal Irish) regiment later that year.

In 1868, Young received his transfer to New Zealand as the Governor’s acting aide-de-camp. The following year he was appointed the position of Assistant Military Secretary to the Governor of New Zealand. Young was promoted to the rank of Major in July 1881, however due to paid retirement, he was instead given the honorary title of Lieutenant-Colonel.

It was in 1872 that Henry William added ‘Keays’ to his surname, during the same year he married Laura Wentworth. Wentworth was the daughter of Irish-born journalist, politician, and New South Wales colonialist William Charles Wentworth. The couple married on December 17th 1872 at St. Paul's Church in Knightsbridge, London. Together the couple had two daughters, Lucilla Constantia Keays-Young (1875-75) and Laura Katherine Keays-Young (1877-79), each of whom tragically died as babies. In November 1887 at Bournemouth, Laura also passed away. Henry remarried Henrietta Talbot and together they had a daughter Henrietta Elizabeth Keays-Young, who was born on December 19th 1890 at Chart Sutton, a village in Kent. Henry William Keays-Young appears to have spent much of his retired life in Kent, England, and passed away on January 28th 1902.
