Joan Dukes taught figure drawing and illustration and lectured in the history of costume at Croydon School of Art 1927-35 and in Dress Design at Sutton, Surrey 1933-35. She then left England to move to New Plymouth where she married (Russelll) Lowell Dukes in 1936.

As she settled into life in New Zealand Joan discovered there was little scope for her previous work. She taught private students during World War Two and after the War illustrated for the "School Journal".

In 1952 she moved to Christchurch where she lived for the rest of her life. She designed costumes for "Coppelia" for the Town Hall Opening Festival 1973 and sets for the Southern Ballets' "Coppelia" in 1976.
