George Frederick Standish
Biography
George Frederick Standish received the New Zealand Medal for his time as a private in No. 1 Company (1860-63), Taranaki Bushrangers (1864) and Taranaki Calvary Volunteers (1894-66). G.F. Standish was born into a prominent early New Plymouth family. He was one of three sons of Thomas Standish who was probably the first practising lawyer in New Plymouth. He was the younger brother of Arthur Standish who, also a lawyer, was the first Mayor of New Plymouth.
George farmed outside of Inglewood after the Taranaki Wars. He married Mary Reilly who was much younger than him. They had a son, Fred, who was brought up by the Brown family after George moved to the Porirua Lunatic Asylum, near Wellington. It had been recently set up for long-term patients and was set in a rural area with farmland to work. George spent the rest of his life there.
