Herman John Schmidt (1872-1959; Main & Turner say 1874-1959) was apprenticed to Charles Hemus, and was managing his portrait studio by 1905, subsequently taking over round about 1907 - although still credited as 'Schmidt, Hemus Studios' in NZ Graphic, 14 December 1907, pp4,5.
