Biography
An obituary printed in the Taranki Herald 27 May 1931 reads : " Death has removed at the age of 56 years one of Inglewood's early and most respected settlers in the person of Major R. S Matthews who, with his brother, Mr Walter Matthews, took up land in the Kaimata district early in the eighties. The deceased gentleman took a very prominent part in military matters on coming to Inglewood and in the old volunteer Corps he was a member of the Hawera Mounted Rifles under the late Colonel Richard Davies. On the outbreak of the Boer War Mr Matthews enlisted, and served as an officer. After demobilisation, he received a military appointment in the Defence Department, from which he retired a few years ago with the rank of major. His wife nee Miss Jollie, having predeceased him some years ago. Major Matthews recently came to Inglewood to live with his only son, Mr Arthur W Matthews, Junction Road. His kindly, courteous, and interesting personality will be greatly missed from this district where he has been held for many years in the very highest esteem."
