Biography
Taare (Charlie) Waitara came to Parihaka in the 1880s from the Wellington area. He was a wealthy kinsman. According to his brother, he was a proponent of racial harmony. He played a leading role in the management of the settlement of Parihaka and he was responsible for the modernization of Parihaka including many of its amenities. Taare did not aspire to Te Whiti's spiritual leadership but Te Whiti reposed Taare's many practical talents. When Te Whiti and Tohu died in 1907, Taare was proclaimed leader of the Parihaka settlement.
