Biography
Arthur Carkeek was a civil engineer and sergeant in the Armed Constabulary stationed at Ohinemutu. He was awarded the New Zealand Cross for bravely carrying, with help from a Maori guide, an important message through enemy territory to Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas McDonnell. The message conveyed the the whereabouts of the advancing Maoris troops led by Te Kooti.
