Biography
In October 1844 John Hassard received a commission to join the 57th Regiment as Ensign. He received the Sardinian, Turkish, and Crimean medals for his courage and behaviour during the Crimean War. He was named Lieutenant-Colonel in 1865. He was mortally wounded at the battle of Otapawa in 1866, suffering a gunshot to the groin.
