Biography
Samuel Mitchell was likely born in Apsley Guise, Bedfordshire, England in 1841. He entered Royal Naval service in 1857 and received training on the HMS Excellent . He was transferred to the Harrier in 1860 and would spend the next four years moving up the ranks to become Captain of the Foretop. In New Zealand, the men of the Harrier played a roll in the Waikato campaign and later the battle at Te Papa. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1864 for rescuing his commander from the pa at Te Papa and he was awarded the New Zealand medal in 1885 for his service in the Land Wars. He was discharged in 1865 and died in 1894 after drowning in the Mikanui River near his farm.
