Biography
Arthur Frederick Pickard was born sometime between 1841 and 1844 in Forest Hill, Northamptonshire, England. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1864 for endagering himself in the attempt to provide water for wounded comrades. He continuously crossed and recrossed the parapet of the Rangiriri Redoubt which was exposed to Maori artillery fire. He was serving as a lieutenant of the Royal Regiment of Artillery when he received his Victoria Cross. He was later promoted to colonel and Equerry to Queen Victoria. He died of tuberculosis in 1880 in Cannes, France.
