Henry Butler
Biography
In January 1865 Lieutenant-Colonel Butler led 180 soldiers of the 57th Regiment to pa Otapawa, near Mount Taranaki, where they planned to take over the Maori defences. When the troops, including the 14th Regiment, were within 40 yards Maori defenders opened fire on the advancnig soldiers. Butler's end of the line retreated and the pakeha troops suffered 21 casualties, including 7 deaths.
