Biography
Sir Duncan Alexander Cameron served with the 42nd Regiment in Crimea before succeeding General Pratt as Commander General in New Zealand in 1861. In Crimea he was well known for his devotion to the education of army officers and was appointed vice-president of the Council for Army Education. In New Zealand he played an important role in the battles in and around Waikato. As the New Zealand Land Wars dragged on, he became opposed to the continued use of regular forces in Taranaki and the conduct of the war. A soldier of an older generation, Cameron relied too heavily on sieges, sapping, and garrisons, tactics that did not work well with the mobility of the Maori. As a result, he resigned in 1865 and returned to England. Cameron died in 1888.
