Patea river and township
Description
Patea river and bridge. Taken sometime after May 1883, as the railway passenger station building seen in the photo was only completed then. The town's coolstores are visible on the left side of river just behind the bridge. Bedford Street, leading to the bridge, was lowered around 1883. It has been suggested that the building on that rise is the second Patea Hotel, built sometime after March 1882, when the tender was accepted by E. Holtham.

This photo is after May 1883 as the railway passenger station building seen in the photo was only completed then. I agree that the double storey building is the 2nd Patea Hotel built sometime after March 1882 when the tender was accepted by E. Holtham. W. M. Knott was the architect. R. C. Tennant (who worked for the bank) was the landowner. It was initially tendered out as a '2 storey shop and dwelling' for what I believe was local politics reasons as when it did come out that there was going to be another hotel (and alcoholic establishment) in town there was a bit of a fuss!

This is interesting as Bedford St leading to the bridge was lowered around 1883 and this clearly shows how high the road was near the bridge. I wonder if the building on that rise was the second Patea Hotel as that was its location.built in 1881.
