Captain Frank Mace and others at Oakura
Description
Photographic postcard of Frank Mace (left) and others on the beach at Oakura near the Ahuahu stream. Mace is supposedly pointing to the site where a group of soldiers from the Taranaki Military Settlers and 57th Regiment were ambushed and killed by a force of Maori Hauhaus in April 1864. Mace, with some of his Taranaki Mounted Rifles, was the first to discover the dead and wounded soldiers.
