Object Detail

Photograph of the Wairau Stream at Oakura. W.F. Gordon can be seen kneeling with a dog on the right side of the photograph in the background. The stream runs through the centre of the photograph. The coast, Paritutu, and the Sugar Loaves can be seen in the background. The site is significant because members of the 57th Regiment (Dr. Hope, Lieutenant Tragett, and others) were killed by a Maori ambush on 4 May 1863. Photograph is mounted to card.
