Richard Rogers died in March 1925 in New Plymouth hospital after a fall from a top window of this hotel. He was in the custom of taking a pipe at night and the landlady did not approve of this practice. He usually had a room with a balcony. On the night of the accident he had been placed in a room with no balcony.
