Gifted as part of the Wilson Collection by Mrs Helen Warren. This item belonged to Dr Peter Wilson, who was chief surgeon of New Plymouth Hospital. He and his family arrived in New Plymouth in 1847, after some time spent in Whanganui. The first New Plymouth hospital was in Mangorei, on the site of what is now New Plymouth Boys' High School, and was mainly frequented by local Maori.

Perhaps this magnifying glass was used by Dr Wilson to help him see patient notes or correctly measure dosages of medicines in times before electric light, or to get a closer look at what ailed his patients!
