Description
Air Force serviceman Bert Sam Wipiti, RNZAF 41388. Pilot Bert Wipiti of 243, 67 and 485 Squadron, R.A.F. was the first Maori pilot to leave New Zealand for overseas duty during the Second World War and the first British pilot to shoot down enemy aircraft over Singapore in 1942. He was reported missing, presumed dead, after combat over northern France on 3 October 1943. On a memorial in Kent, England, he is listed as 'W.O. Herbert Samuel Wipiti, DFM'.
