Description
An engraved silver pocket watch complete with chain and brass key. " PRESENTED / TO / Sergt Major Oldfield / BY THE NON COMD. OFFICERS / AND CONSTABLES / OF PUKEARUHE / STATION / TARANAKI / AS A MARK OF THEIR / ESTEEM " is elaborately engraved on the reverse of the movement. " B CLARKE & Co. / LONDON / 40716 " is written on the white face of the movement. The face is covered in glass and it also features a small seconds dial. " R J P " is stamped on the underside of the lid of the case and there are various makers marks stamped on it as well.

This watch was presented to Sergeant Major Thomas Oldfield during the 1870s. After leaving the Armed Constabluary he ran a drapery shop in New Plymouth before selling out and dabbling in various Taranaki Ironsand ventures before becoming a surveyor. He died suddenly of natural causes in October 1902 while leading a Government survey party along the Rawhitiroa Road, near the headwaters of the Waitotara River, south Taranaki.
