Description
A Sardinha issue Turkish Crimea War medal mounted on a simple suspension ring. The obverse features a cannon, weapons and the four allied flags " LA CRIMEA / 1855 " is marked near the bottom of the medal. The reverse features the Toughra (seal or signature) of Sultan Abd al-Mejid. " No. 3169 M WATSON 57th REG " is engraved on the edge of the medal. The medal is attached to a more modern suspension ring and a fine silver chain. The medal was held in a modern hinged case covered in black fabric. " Crimean War / Medal " is handwritten on a white label stuck to the lid.

This medal was issued to Matthew Watson for his Crimean War service with the 57th Regiment. While these types of medals were originally designed for issue to Sardinian troops they were issued to British troops as well. Watson arrived in Taranaki in 1861 and farmed in the Ōākura area until he died in 1914.
