Description
Portrait of Richard Chilman (1816-1877) who sailed to New Zealand on the ship William Bryan in 1840 as a Plymouth Company clerk. Settling at New Plymouth, Chilman was clerk to successive agents of the Plymouth and New Zealand Companies and was appointed Provincial Treasurer in 1853. In 1871 he went to England to obtain capital for the development of ironsands in Taranaki. He also held the posts of Provincial Auditor and Receiver of Land Revenue and was one of the founders of the New Plymouth Institute.
