Oral history. Gladys was born in Mahoe in 1909 and shifted to Kaupokonui when she was 4 years. Father a farmer who milked by hand. She went to Manaia school but didn't go to High School. Married and lived in Manaia. Husband Jack felled native bush and with a 3 month old baby they lived in a tent. When husband went ploughing they lived in a whare with a dirt floor and growing trees at each corner. No electricity and she would walk 6 miles to visit the in-laws. They lived there 3-4 years. Husband bought bullock business and carted shingle from Otakeho River. Then he bought a lorry. He would go pig hunting at Whangamomona. Jack was secretary of the Auroa Highland Pipe Band. Gladys organised the supper. They moved to Kaukoponui in 1913 and lived there for 16 years and she mentions the Manaia School Jubilee 1975.
