This 1950s pump sign which has been stencilled on the rear of a " Shell " sign is one of the few remaining objects from Taranaki's early petroleum industry. In 1954 the trade name " Peak " was registered for locally-produced petrol from the Moturoa field in New Plymouth. Later in the 1950s ' single-brand ' service stations spelled the end of publicly available ' Peak ' but production of diesel, fuel oil and petrol continued until 1978, to supply several commercial transport firms.
