Daguerreotype portrait of Jane Maria Atkinson (nee Richmond) taken on the eve of her departure for New Zealand, 8 December 1852. Atkinson is pictured leaning on a table with one hand holding open a book. She holds her other hand up to her face. A sewing basket also rests on the table. Atkinson is wearing a dress with a lace collar and cuffs. The daguerreotype is set in a plain maroon leather case with a hinged lid lined with plain maroon velvet. The image is framed by a plain gold oval metal matt. The case has two clasps on the right hand side.
