Hanson Turton and Gibson Kirke Turton

Production date
Circa 1852
Description
Daguerreotype portrait of Hanson Turton and Gibson Kirke Turton, aged 9 and 11 respectively, the sons of the Reverend Henry Hanson Turton and Susannah Turton. The boys are dressed in suits and both wear bow ties. The older boy is holding a stick in one hand. There is possibly light hand tinting to the faces. The daguerreotype is housed in a plain maroon leather case lined with plain maroon velvet. A square gold matt surrounds the portrait and the case also has an embossed gold metal edge around the matt. The case has double clasps on the right hand side. The daguerreotype was taken by Lawson Insley while on his tour of New Zealand during 1852-53. One of the earliest known daguerreotypes to have been made in New Zealand.
