Description
A trench art paper knife and nib pen made of brass and steel. The decorated blade tapers to a point at one end and is slotted into a handle fashioned from a rifle bullet case that is decorated with a crown from a badge or a button. " MESSINES " is marked on the blade. A small nib pin with a short rounded handle fits into the bullet case.

This trench art paper knife and nib pen was donated to Taranaki Museum in 1980. The maker is currently unknown but it is inscribed in reference to the Battle of Messines, which began in West Flanders, Belgium on 7 June 1917.
