View of Devon Street looking west from near the intersection with Egmont Street around 1896. On the left of the image are the business premises of P.R. Carthew, Richard Cock, Syke's Chemist and the Colonial Bank. On the right is W. Bewley, a hairdresser and tobacconist. A horse and carriage can be seen parked outside Carthew's store.
Philip Richards Carthew (1856-1904) settled in New Plymouth in the 1880s and went into business with Hal Goodacre, owning the Egmont Boot & Shoe Company. He later opened this large furniture store on Devon Street West.
