Oral history. Born in New Plymouth 1908. Father was an accountant, in 1910 he bought the general store at Patutahi, 12 miles west of Gisborne. Describes his life as a child during WW1 where hatred of things German spread to school children. Mentions an earthquake and a big flood. 1920 moved to New Plymouth travelling by boat and train. School at Fitzroy and New Plymouth Boys' High School. Went as farm boy to Auroa and then Manaia. Was in Manaia Brass Band. Describes both towns. With brother Tom, leased Mrs King's farm on Rowan Rd, Kaponga from 1934. Escaped the War because farming was an essential occupation but was in the Home Guard. Married during second year of lease, his brother marrying her sister. Describes shortages during the War. Bought Rama Rd farm, Auroa and has lived there for 50 years.
