Description
Oral history. Born at Waiokura marae, Manaia 1923. Father a farmer and haymaker. Maori adults English poor in 1920'-30's. Enjoyed Manaia Primary and District High school. Maori language forbidden at school. Left aged 15years. Describes life in Manaia. The baths opened 1952. Worked in woollen mill in Petone where he met his wife Connie, an essential industry so did not go overseas to War. Manpowered to forestry in Motueka 1943 where he lived for three years, then returned to Patea Freezing Works for 5 seasons, Kaupokonui and Waiokura cheese factories, and Riverdale Dairy Co for 4 seasons. Describes cheese making. Cheese transported to railheads at Kapuni and Hawera. Cheese factories closed 1952. Worked as groundsman at Hawera hospital for one year. Describes changes around Manaia.
